Head Like a Hole Empty
PostSubject: Head Like a Hole   Head Like a Hole EmptySun Aug 16, 2009 2:18 am

It would have been the first time that he would visit that spot since his departure from it: The clearing of dead, dry grass and the past home of the great sword and the lion demon that guarded it. Shou was beyond that now, but he sought to seek the spot once more, for it was where his human body resided, within the soils. The night was all ready approaching, as the trees of the forest blocked away most of the sunset's rays of illumination and heat. The area was growing dangerous, he knew, but he didn't let it slow him down, thinking himself more than capable of handling his own these days.
Shou traveled by air, a running pace in his lion demon form. As his feet touched down with every step, small discs of fires would erupt and serve as platforms for him to travel upon. As soon as that claw would lift away from the flame, it would dissapear. In the past, this technique had costed him a great deal of concentration, but with practice had come perfection.
The trees in the area were plenty and crowding, but eventually they would come to dwindle slowly, then cease to be all together. The grass below was much darker than the rest of the wood, brown and dry. Nothing grew here, and it had been this way for as long as the lion demon could remember. It descended down towards the ground from the air by simply discontinuing the fire discs and dropped down to the ground, his entire form beginning to glow.
From the shine, his human form would have emerged, stepping forward and out across the grass. He made way towards the middle of the clearing, while his mind wandered to that night, one of the only memories he possessed, and certainly unique in that the details of it were crystal clear to him..
He shook off the thought. The human days were behind him now and he had come into a whole entirely new state of being. The man he was once hated the oni. Therefore, the man he was once could be considered an enemy to the oni he was now. Only an enemy to his thoughts, however, as he couldn't take his mind off of it.
Shou made his way to the center of the clearing, pausing here and glancing downwards to the ground his feet stood upon. This was where he had made that last stand, utilizing every lifeforce a desperate human could muster. And for what reason, he couldn't remember.. the oni were a cruel race, it seemed, satisfied with chaos and suffering. "What wayward spirits we are.." Shou mumbled out loud to himself, sighing lightly and having a seat on the grass, a light crunch beneath him against the dry vegetation.
The earth beneath him felt as if it shook for a second, bringing the demon into alertness and onto his feet. Suddenly, the ground all around him began to rumble and shake, while something was emerging from the very ground itself, dirt and grass being pushed aside to allow the thing through. A giant snake head was the first thing Shou made out from the ground, his eyes coming open wide to regard the thing as it continued to break free from the ground. It was all around him, wrapped in a great circle that nearly took up the entirety of the clearing. Slithering its body to a more agreeable position and lifting its head high into the air, Shou was forced to consider the thing's size, as he nearly had to look up five stories just to see the it's face.
"What is this..?" The lion demon questioned, bewildered by this sudden appearance of such a giant thing. What chance did he possibly stand? No!, the thought shouted out into his head, his brow furrowing as a determination suddenly arose and shut away his doubts. Besides, he was the great lion who once guarded these very lands. If something like this arose, what choice would he have but to fight it? Deciding the human form wasn't convenient in this case, he shifted back into his true lion form, roaring as the shine died away around him.
With its great maw opened, just before him a red orb began to collect and flare out, growing larger in size before coming into the form of the fyreball. It blasted outwards and towards the head of the snake. It hissed briefly before ducking out of the way, surprisingly quick as the fyreball soared throughout the night air before dying away.
The lion snarled, and turned, running away from the thing. In truth, the act wasn't one of cowardice, but more of strategy. Out here in this open area the lion was an easy target to the snake. With the complications of the trees, it was sure to lose advantage of size. While retreating to the woods, he turned his head briefly, blasting off another fyreball in the snake's direction. As the demon was in pursuit, it hadn't registered the oncoming strike in time to avoid it, being blasted in the face. It hissed loudly in complaint and came to a stop for a moment. That was all it bought though, a mere moment.
The lion then dissapeared into the masses of the trees, the darkness that was overwhelming the wood was in its completion now. It paused after a few moments and turned back towards the clearing, visible under the moonlight. The snake slithered to the edge of the forest and peered into the darkness. It then hissed and swung the end part of its body forward, smashing through the wood of the trees and removing the darkness of the spot it had demolished.
The oni had to make sure he fully appreciated the power of his opponent. There was no room for underestimation, for the snake seemed ultimately more powerful than him. The lion growled at the thought. He was deep enough that the initial strike of the snake hadn't revealed him and he leapt atop several thick branches before leaping out into the air, the discs of flames returning to catch his steps before they fell through the air.
Charging towards the snake, it let loose another fyreball as it ran forward, though the larger demon ducked once more out of its path. The lion was within range that he leapt towards the area where the snake had retreated into. Those fangs came to bite down through the snake's skin and it hissed, thrashing its head about. He clamped down tighter, though he felt the flesh coming loose within his mouth. Another thrash and he was tossed aside.. back into the middle of the clearing!
By the time the lion had come to stand back up to its four claws, the snake's body was all around him and it suddenly coiled against him, holding him in place and tightening more. The oni roared in distress as the length of the snake was starting to crush his sides inwards. The snake continued to tighten its hold, intending to crush its prey, when the lion gave off another roar and suddenly its body flared up on fire. The snake hissed as the spots of its skins were suddenly burned, loosening around the thing at the instant those stings of flames had touched it.
Takashou touched back down on the ground, the flame around his body dying off. It growled lightly in the snake's direction, now showing to himself that he was something that could hold his ground against even these larger demons. The snake oni hissed, regarding the discolored flesh on its body. It then turned to Takashou, narrowing its eyes menacingly. "This is all futile.. little cat!" The snake hissed out loud, its mouth opening as suddenly a purple mist began to emit outwards into the area. The lion backed away a few steps before deciding that avoiding this mist all together was a ridiculous notion. It was all ready filling the area fast, and it looked left and right as the area was covered. "What sort of trick is this?"
The lion then coughed suddenly and viciously, gasping to regain breath. What was this air..? The snake oni chuckled then, seeing its prey struggling with the simple task of breathing. The lion demon growled lightly, before the fire suddenly bursted outwards around him again, eating at the air that the mist occupied. The flare died out and the area around him was cleared, but the mist was too much and filled in again almost instantly.
The snake oni didn't relent, either, not satisfied with only watching its victims die. Especially this one that had scarred its left side with the discolored burn mark. That wouldn't be looking right again until its next shedding. From its mouth, it spat out a sudden glob of a purple substance. The lion demon recognized how dangerous this sort of attack might have been and brought the remaints of the energy he had left just to get himself out of the way, dodging the glob that struck the ground. A hiss went into the air, but it was not one from the snake. The dead grass that the poison had landed against was suddenly burning, a sickly smoke rising into the air that only worsened the presence of the mist. The lion growled, realizing he was getting way in over his head now from this powerful demon. His realizations were fueled by the sight of small miniature demon snakes slithering from the ground where the poison had struck.
The lion turned and worked his legs as powerfully as he could out of there, fueled by neccessity, the need to live and continue on. When facing such an overpowering enemy, he decided it best interest to get the hell out of the area and come back maybe some other time. Self-preservation was definitely top priority.
Poison globs came flying from the sky, the lion worked with more unpredicatable changes in movements, sometimes bouncing to the left or right to narrowly escape the acidic gunk. To make matters worse, a small army of small snakes was following his trail as well. Not that it really mattered, paled by the comparison of those small things to the actual demon itself. It was quite obviously in a level higher than himself, a transformation of some sorts to be able to be in a form that size.
The lion demon bested the thing on speed, the natural benefit of the animal that his yokai was based on. Taking to the skies, discs of flames came under his feet once more, taking him away from the place. Making his way halfway across the wood, he turned to look behind him.
The snake was slithering through the air as if the very essence of gravity was lost upon it. Another purple glob shot outwards, but the lion managed a dodge easily enough from the distance. Still, Shou cursed this luck of his as his ideas of fleeing seemed impossible now. He was counting on the cover of the trees to stop the snake in its tracks. And while he might have been fast, he wasn't fast enough to completely lose the snake by the time he got to the city. Simply trying to lose it by running randomly around the forest would only endager himself, as he might awaken demons like this one, or stronger.
The snake continued its head on charge, angered by the lion demon, coming in fast and hard. The lion roared loudly, rearing its head back, as suddenly a wall of flame bursted into being in front of it. The snake ran straight into it, then reared its head back suddenly screaming in pain. "My eyes! You've burned my--" It didn't get the chance to finish the statement as a pair of giant fangs bit down at same side of neck earlier. They dug ever deeper into the all ready exposed flesh, and the lion tore its head back viciously, ripping ever deeper into the snake's skin.
The snake oni screamed ever louder and the lion jumped off of it as it started to descend downwards to the ground. Shou himself padded down otno the dead grass while looking back at the snake that collapsed into the ground, bringing about another small rumble. "Please be dead.." The lion quietly said to himself, not sure if he had anything left in him to continue fighting this demon. The snake's body then began to slither very slowly. Shou could only sigh.
The snake's head reared in the air and began to slowly advance towards the lion before stopping a distance. Its eyes were narrowed, glaring at the man. "Too much trouble for such a small little demon.. I need recovering now. The next time I see you in this wood, though.. I will have my revenge for these scars!"
The snake turned and began to slither away, before suddenly the backside of it lashed outwards and slammed into the lion's body. It sent Shou flying through the air before his side smacked against the wood of a tree, breaking through the bark and giving the posture of the thing a horrific bend in the thing. He landed on the ground, the breath knocked out of him, trying to gasp though seeming to fail to do so.. the pain that was shooting through his side might have been reason for that. Or the sudden hit to the lung.
The snake chuckled lightly, continuing its retreat from the fight, though knowing it had demonstrated its power enough to put the lion demon in its place. Surely, Shou would not leave feeling like a winner. He weakly got up to his feet and simply blessed his luck this day.
One thing was for certain though. Their second meeting had all ready been planned, set to happen in the future for certainty. Shou would have to train up to that point, continuing with lower leveled demons and working his way up the chain. Surely a lion oni such as himself had a place in this world worthy of a king.
Shou wouldn't allow a simple snake demon to get in the way of these ambitions. Hell, he was walking out of here alive, that was something to take victory in. And if he could handle his own against that demon at this level.. he would definitely have to continue training.
The lion walked through the sky slowly, exhausted. His body was sore from running and his sides were still stinging from the pain. Having used as many fyreballs as he had, and learning two new alternatives of his uses of fire, had definitely put a drain on him, though. They were handy spells, though, something he could use in the future. But, before he went off fighting any more demons, he decided some rest would be best. Padding off in the direction of the city, he slowly made his way back to the place.
Shou then paused for a brief moment, then winced lightly. He turned his head to look back to his hind, right leg, seeing a small snake chewing on his leg there. "You would dare.." The lion growled menacingly, causing the snake to pause in its chewing and regard the oni it had picked to nibble on. "Nyu?" Suddenly his body flared up on fire and the snake's little baby screams died out after only a brief moment. Shou noticed he was only able to keep this technique going for so long, all ready the flames were dying out around him. They served the purpose though. "I hate snakes.." Shou muttered to himself, continuing on his way home.
