a rainy day

Subject: a rainy day Sun Nov 21, 2010 9:45 pm

The sound of rain drops the size of marbles drummed in my flat as I snuggled myself into the blanket that was carefully tucked around my body. My flat was gray and gloomy from the white light outside and the only noticeable colour was from the reading light which had been carefully placed above me and my book in the corner of the couch, along with a large multitude of pillows and a glass of red wine. Finishing another page, I leave the bookmark in and carefully close the book before placing it on the table next to the couch, after putting down the book, I took a gentle nip at the wineglass before I would sink into the pillows and drag the blanket up to my chin as my gaze shifted from the glass and to the window.

The flat was a little damp as I had not bothered to put on the heaters and I had not bothered to open the windows to let it out. Sitting there, slightly freezing I began to think on different things, on work, on life in general. I was twenty-one now and I had no boyfriend not even a flat mate, which was fine since I did enjoy my private time and the time that wasn’t private was work anyway! Letting my eyes go around the flat, I began to take in how impersonal it looked in the gray and white light. So fake, so unfriendly. I had pictures, figurines and ornaments placed on more surfaces, my kitchen was state of the art with smooth and straight lines, my floor was a dark red wooden colour and my interior was up to fashion.

A sigh escaped me as I leaned forwards and grabbed my laptop, opening the lid and punching in the password I was greeted by a welcome and good day before it went silent. Checking up on my email and im chat I found myself to even be alone on the interwebs. Finding this to be sensible, as it was eleven in the morning at that most of them would be at work, I began to look up on news and other things online. After having read today’s newspaper and police logs I find myself left with a boring game of chess against the computer which I was losing. Having lost the game of chess, I place the laptop onto the table, take a good sip at the wine before I would sit up, and remove the blanket before standing up and stretching.

After stretching I headed towards the fridge, feeling the hunger that the followed after a long morning of boredom. Walking around the counter, I reach the refrigerator and with a tuck at the handle it opens up, exposing two rows of vegetables, three bottles of wine, two packets of fruits, some meat and sauces plus some spreads and cheeses. Grabbing a apple, I would close the door and walk back towards the couch and on the way turn on two of the heaters before I would tuck myself into the blanket again, returning to the drowsy state of staring out the window as I ate my apple.

The Enforcer comes to a stop in the flat’s parking lot with a black coup sports car parking along and to the side. My hand turns the key and pulls it out of the ignition. In the still SUV, I look up and towards Nikki’s apartment. With the windshield wipers paused, the rain starts to bead up on the windshield. There is a frumpy look on my face as I would have wished for this to have been done on a better day. I imagined something like this happening with the sun out and shining so that this surprise could be a little better, but it seemed that I wasn’t in luck today. On top of that, I didn’t have an umbrella.

The door to the Enforcer opens and I step out, feeling the cool drops of rain strike my body relentlessly. At the same time, the door to the sports coup opens and Ted steps out of it. Looking towards him, he tosses the keys of the car to me and I catch it in my right hand before stuffing my hands into my pockets. With my head partially down due to the rain coming down, I inquire to Ted, “are you coming?” The shakes his head no and motions to the Enforcer. He didn’t seem that social anyways, even if it were Nikki we were talking about. With a nod, I accept this and start walking towards the complex heading to Nikki’s flat. The news had come in about her successful extraction in the mission with Michael; she had done a pretty good job. On top of that, she had been with us for a while, and under my recommendation, her position had been elevated to that of a Lt. As such, I wanted to surprise her with her new undercover vehicle and the news of her promotion. She had been doing much better than I could have expected from a rookie.

Jogging up the stairs, I make it up and out of the rain. Getting to her floor, I run my hand back through my hair, flinging it back. It was a bit uncomfortable being wet; but I’d live. Eventually, I come to Nikki’s door. It seemed very familiar, though the last time I was here was that time. By now I had figured out what happened, but nothing had ever been said about it between me and her. I decided that it was probably something I wouldn’t talk about or bring up. My fist comes up and I knock three times at the door and step back so that she would be able to see me if she looked out of the peep hole.

Sitting in the couch in a almost trance while looking out of the window, I overhear the first knocks and only become evident of them on the last knock, with the apple half eaten and still in my mouth. I crawl off the couch and head to the dumpster to dispose of the apple before I would head to the sink, washing my hands and taking in a mouthful of cold water, rinsing my teeth of any possible bits of apple left. Using the dishcloth to dry my hands, I walk over to the door, lazily scratching the bag of my head as I flattened the big monster that seemed to have take residence on top of my head. Coming to the door, I let my body almost fall into the door as I look through the peephole. With a gasp and a shock I see Jyn standing on the other side, which was surprising since I did not expect him to be here, at least not when it was this kind of weather and this early in the day!

Taking a step back from the door, I quickly spin around and dashes towards the couch and take on my knitted jacked outside the top I was wearing. In the same movement I stop in front of the mirror and correct my hair further, making it at least look like I hadn’t just been slacking on the couch all day. Walking over to the door, I would first remove the chain lock before I would flick the bolt open and open the door to greet Jyn with a smile. “Humid outside?” I joking asked as I opened the door and invited him into my gray and dark flat. After his entry I would close the door and lock it shut before turning one of the corner lamps on, making the flat light up into a soft orange colour.

“You want something to drink? Maybe something warm, since you are soaked?” I ask as I walk into the kitchen area and take out a canister of imported coffee. It was still unclear to me why he had come here. It was not as if I was in trouble, not that something had happened, or at least what I knew, though the look on his face told me that there was something going on and that it would just be a matter of time before he would tell me.

I wait a little while at the door after knocking. I figured she was home, because I felt her moving around. I even felt her reach the door and then depart from it quickly. I wondered if I had come at a bad time or something like that. I didn’t feel the presence of anyone else in the apartment, so I wondered if she simply didn’t wish to speak with me. I do feel her come back to the door and open it, leaving me confused on what the movement was for, but not really making any mention of it. “Just a bit,” I would answer her joking greeting. As I am offered inside, I step in; familiar settings. I hear the door locked behind me. I wondered if this were a save neighborhood or if that was just a habit she had. My gaze shifts to her as I return the greeting, watching her walk towards the kitchen. Staying by the door, I begin to say that I was fine, until I see that she had a can of coffee in her hands. Old habits die hard. “I can stay for a cup, I suppose,” I answer her back, still kind of hovering near the doorway. I didn’t want to get the interior of her apartment too wet with my arrival. I add, “A towel would be nice as well…” Moving onto business, I begin, “We need to have a conversation. I came to talk to you about your resent progress… and about your last mission with Michael… since you’re off right now, I figured if I came to you, I wouldn’t have to pay you over time to come in.” The last part was a bit of a tease on my end; I wouldn’t go into much detail yet about what facet of the mission I would be reviewing with her, however.

As he enters the kitchen area, I begin to make everything for some coffee and when he accepts the offer for some hot beverage I clap my hands together and giggle in a girlish voice “Yay, company!” before continuing, silently chuckling to myself as he mentions that a towel would also be a good thing. Putting the coffee in a kettle and the kettle with water onto the gas, I start for the bathroom to retrieve him a towel to dry his face and hair. “mhm” I reply when he start to go down to business and makes a joke about overtime payment. “Well, let’s hope those coins comes in handy later then” I reply with a chuckle as I exit the bathroom, carrying a beige towel. Handing the towel to him, I would move around the counter and take out a small box containing from crackers. Placing them onto the counter I would continued to retrieve two cups from the cupboard. “I guess it’s something more than just briefing when the commissioner comes home to a officer… am I right?” I reply with a hinting voice as I sit down on the chair opposite of him, placing the cups on the table next to the crackers.

Assuming it might have been about the mission, I decided to lead on with the conversation. “If it’s the mission, I thought it was a success, we retrieved the target and handed it over to Angel in good shape. And as far as I know, Michael deleted the records in the club, so technically we weren’t even there” having finished my ‘defence’ I turn to the plate and the kettle and give it a stir before putting it back down on the heat. “You want anything in your coffee? Sugar, milk?” I ask as I go to the fridge to retrieve some cream for my own coffee.

Since I would be inside temporarily, I pull my arms out of my coat and hold it to the side, lowering it to the ground next to the wall near the doorway. Looking back up, I move from my position near the doorway more towards the kitchen as she moves into the bathroom to retrieve the towel. When it is brought, my right hand reaches out as I accept the beige cloth with a ‘thanks’ and use it to wipe my face first and then brush it through my hair. Since the coat had been covering my upper body, I would be fine with just drying my hair, face and neck. As she sets the cups and crackers on the counter, I place the towel over the rear of the seat, running my hands through my hair to make sure it wasn’t straight up and frazzled, and take a seat opposite Nikki. “I suppose you could say that,” I answer back to her conjecture. I listen to the run-down of the mission, a similar story that I heard from Michael. When the question comes, I speak, “no thank you” as I preferred my coffee black. As she makes her way to the fridge, my eyes would be on her back for a moment, “actually, I wanted to praise you on such a good job.” In looking over her body from behind, lingering memories of her nude body pushing back against me as I thrust from behind flash into my mind for that moment. Thinking a bit, my gaze shifts down and to the right as I wait for her to return before my gaze lifts back up and to her. On her return from the fridge my hand would come out of my pocket and she would be greeted by a pair of keys sliding across the counter to her. “You did such a good job, I bought you a car,” I say with a light visage and continue, “congratulations, Lieutenant.”

Taking the coffee off the plate and bringing it over to the table, I pour two cups up for us before placing the kettle back onto the plate, preventing the coffee from going cold. “I did what I had to, it’s my job remember” I said with scurrying eyes from side to side as I sat down onto the chair opposite. At this point, I was sure that he had in some way gotten his hands on the tapes from the club, but when a pair of keys slid over the counter my brows raised as I stared from the keys and to him. “Pardon?” I ask as I thought he just said that he had bought me a car and that I had actually been promoted from officer to lieutenant! Calming myself I add a little cream to the coffee and take a long sip at it, coughing as it was still quiet warm and it was too much for me to swallow away at one go.

Staring down at the keys, I continued to drink the coffee as if it was water for a man that had just crawled out of the desert. “This isn’t a joke right?” I say as I put down the cup, grabbing a cracker before I would return my gaze to Jyn, hoping to maybe decipher his gaze. Still not believing that I had been promoted and that he had actually bought me a car! “Heh, where is my manners!” I jump as I get out of my chair and walk around the counter. Reaching his side, I would extend my own as to give a handshake, but re-decided and turn it more into a hug. “Thank you!” I squeal in happiness as I tighten my hold of him. Releasing the hug, I would quickly brush my fingers through the hair so it would be to fuzzed up and sit down on the nearest chair. “It must have cost you a fortune!” I realized as I begin to play with the keys, spinning them around my index fingers as I suddenly stiffen up and give him a sly smile “This on the divisions tab isn’t it?” with a chuckle I quelled the smile and took another cookie, gently biting into it as I put on a thoughtful appearance.

After sliding the keys to her, my hand comes to the cup of coffee that was poured for me. I recline casually in the seat provided and lift the coffee to my lips, testing the temperature before taking a small sip of the hot liquid. It did prove to be helpful in warming me up; suitable enough for something out of a can. I glance up at her at the coughing and lower my cup, myself casually sitting comfortably upright as if at the office or something; it was just the normal air I had developed up to this point. With the initial question, I had to ponder if her asking me if I were joking were a joke. I might have to change my name to Tapp for that to be true. As she comes around, I accept the handshake that would move into a pat her on the arm with an honest visage as I assure, “you’ve done well to earn it. You’ve adapted much better than I could have imagined as a rookie.” But instead of the handshake, I find myself caught off guard in the middle of my sentence as I am hugged tightly. With a slight, “heh” I comment, “it’s actually outside if you want to see it. I had Ted bring it with me, though, you know how he is. He opted to stay behind in the Enforcer while I gave you the good news. Would you like to see it?” Hopefully the rain had died down a bit so the scene of her new car wouldn’t be too dreary.

Lighting up as he mentioned that the car was outside, I quickly moved around the counter and turned the plates off before I would lean over the counter and gaze at him with two narrow eyes. “Of course I will,” I growl at his question if I wanted to see it. Moving towards the door, I grab one of the jackets that hang on the wall and quickly slip my feet into two black leather boots before opening the door. Leaving the door open, I lean over and pick up Jyn’s jacket before handing it over to him. “This will make life so much easier, especially in the morning as I don’t have to wait for the bus or walk all the way to the division” I say as I wait for Jyn to take on his jacket before I would exit my flat and wait out in the hallway. Waiting for Jyn to exit after me, I would lock the door as he exits before placing the keys in my pocket and tagging along with him down the hallway towards the staircase. “I hope you didn’t buy a girly car, like a pink little prius or something, because, if you did, I will take your car and you can be the one driving the prius” I joke as I spin the keys around my finger, admiring its shiny chrome as the light bounced of the smooth and shiny surface.

Reaching the staircase, I would be the first one to transcend down it, not really rushing off. The car would still be there, even if I took my time getting down, which did. Feeling how my stomach twisted and turned in excitement on the car and the fact that I from this day onwards was a lieutenant. With a broad smile on my face, I would turn as I reach the bottom and wait for Jyn to catch up before I would continue to the door and open it, letting the door swing wide open so I could see if there was any rain or not. Luckily, the worst part was over and only a few drops fell here and there, making it safe to exit without drowning in the rain that had been going on for the better part of the day.

With almost a grin, I realized that we would be heading outside now. I reach for the coffee, bringing it with me as I make it to the door following her. With the coffee in my right hand, I accept the coat handed to me in my left, walking through the door that was left open for me. I simply give a nod as she goes on about the convenience of a car. Now that she didn’t have to stand at a bus stop, I figured that should limit the amount of men who hit on her on a daily basis by at least ten percent. I move with her as we head down to look at the car, teasing back, “the girliest one I could find.” Leisurely I make it to the base of the stairs as the car comes into view. Luckily, it didn’t seem to be pouring down like it had been when I originally came in. Since it was no longer raining, Ted would be standing outside the Enforcer, leaning against it with his arms folded. On sight of us, he would turn and push off of the Enforcer, indicating to Nikki her car. I walk up behind her still sipping the coffee before I would lower the cup and confirm, “There you go, Lt. It’s an undercover vehicle, so the plates will only come up with you as an office if another officer looks them up. You’ll be using it in your upcoming missions. I only came to drop it off to you, so I’ll head out and give you some time to bond with your car…”

Walking down the last flight of stairs to the parking lot, I begin to see the lower parts of the car and when the grill comes into view I almost fell over. It was not just a car, it was the car! An Aston Martin DB9, a lean and fast sports car with more torque than the best police cars and lines that could suit a woman perfectly. Jumping the last two steps, I rush over to the car, stopping a few feet away as my hands covers the gaping hole of my mouth. “Oh my god!” I gasp as I turn to look at Ted and then to Jyn before returning my gaze to the car. Stepping closer, I would place my hand onto the smooth surface as I began to walk down the side of it, stopping at the doors where I would bend over and look inside and see the white and black leather interior, ornamented with real ash wood outlines. Walking backwards toward the rear I let my hand slide over the back as I take in the beauty of the tail lights before I would bring the keys out and up in front of me.

Pressing the unlock button, the car’s lights blink twice and a click can be heard as the locks turns open and the driver’s sides door opens. “So if I get fined for speeding, do I just send the ticket to the division” I ask as I walk towards the open door, my left hand still being at my mouth as I still didn’t believe this to be the car that Jyn had bought for me. Stopping by the open door, I hesitate to get in, but the excitement was too much and I throw myself into the seat and place the key into the ignition. Before starting the engine, I make sure to adjust the seat and mirrors so I would have no problems when firing the beast up. With a solid turn of the key, the car growls loud enough for it to echo of the walls and make a dog bark in the distant. “You sir” I say as I point at Jyn, “You have gotten yourself one happy girl, which also happens to be working for you!” with a giggle, I close the door and put the car into reverse and hit the pedal, sending the car rocketing backwards.

With a solid pull at the hand brake, I’m able to send the car spinning around and with a quick change of gears the car is into drive and the car continues forwards, speeding up as I exit the parking lot and enter the road. Putting the car into second and then third gear, I find myself to be driving around the block in a speed of almost sixty miles an hour, which made the trip around the block to last less than two minutes. Coming into the parking lot again, I stop the car next to the enforcer before pressing the gas one more time, making the car growl loudly before I would turn it off and exit. Standing in the open door I smiled at Jyn from ear to ear, being so happy that I could have ran to him and kissed him, but forced myself not to as Ted was also here. “I think that me and this baby will get along good!” I say as I gently pat the roof of the car before closing the door behind me and walking back up to Jyn.

“No,” I make clear on that, “if you get stopped for speeding, I take it out of your pay.” I stand by and continue to sip the coffee as I wait for her to walk around the car. After a moment or so, I make my way closer over towards the Enforcer where Ted was standing at. Thought it wasn’t extremely obvious, I could tell that Ted was amused by her. The other members in my team had less flashy vehicles, but this was something confiscated by the city police and donated to the Division. No one had been using it, so when Michael brought it to my attention, it seemed like a good candidate to offer Nikki. The car almost seemed like her, or resembled her in a way. By the time I return my gaze to her, the car was started and she was off. I figured much of her salary would go towards paying off speeding tickets, but to each their own. I look over to Ted who shrugs looking back at me, then looks back to the street. “Maybe I should have gotten her a minivan,” I murmur returning my gaze towards the area of the road where the whining sound of the engine would be echoing from. With her return, I give a soft sigh and a shake of the head before looking up and saying, “glad you like it. Try not to kill anyone.” With that, I would motion for Ted that it was time to go and he would walk past Nikki, patting her on the shoulder with a congratulating nod before moving around to the passenger side of the Enforcer. Looking to Nikki, I conclude my visit with, “stay safe” before suggesting opening the door and holding onto the side of it, “Since you make more now, you might want to look into getting a place with a garage. I have a real estate agent if you need someone.”

Still feeling the excitement in the body and the rush from driving so fast, I hardly felt the hand that Jyn placed on my shoulder and when he tells me to drive safe and not to kill anyone I chuckle in response, “Will try not to” Walking in front of the car, I would listen to what Jyn said and take it to heart by accepting his offer, “Sure, if you could send me the number I’ll see what I’ll find” giving a wave as they drive off, I let my eyes fall onto the brand new car that now stood on the parking lot. “Damn, if the other girls find out, I’m… no, he’s in deep trouble” I chuckle to myself as I lock the car as I head back in, my hands tucking hard on the key. Coming back up into my flat, I remove my coat and hang it on the wall and place the keys on the counter before heading straight over to the couch, entrenching myself again into the blanket and pillows with the laptop on my knees. Taking his advice, I began to stream through different adverts for houses and flats being sold around the city, though I intended to use his real estate agent and maybe even get a bargain, but this would give me a good idea of what was available and what I would like to live in for maybe a longer period than six months.
