| “Damn Meth ruins everything!” William groaned, and took a sip of his coffee. He was hefty, middle aged man, at lest twice my age, and fit your typical cop look, large belly with a well groomed moustache, that held some crumbs from his last doughnut. He was my partner, though I suspected I’d been paired with him because he was actually very smart when he focused. But his prime was behind him, he could no longer chase down the bad guys, that was my job as the young pup, I did the grunt work, chasing em down, and doing paper work. “Meth? You know the city has other problems besides just meth,” I said looking back over to him. That was one of Williams endearing qualities, his ability to link every negative situation to Meth, it was astounding. “Yeah but if you really think about it, meth heads are the root of all our problems.” He said with such confidence I almost believed him. I pulled the car to a stop, where we had been stationed to keep watch few hours. Some local business owner had been robbed, and asked that we keep an eye on the area to stop anything like that from reoccurring. It was a nice gesture, but the force was spread thin as it was, and we all knew how it would go. We’d patrol the area a few days, then they’d have something-important come up and we’d be pulled some other location, and the criminals would rob another place. As I stopped the car a shadow fell from the top of the car onto the wind shield causing me to jump in my seat, and William to spill his coffee from my reaction. “Damnit boys are you on Meth!?” William bellowed, as I noticed that it was only a bird. I calmed myself, and sighed. “Sorry Will” I groaned knowing that he’d go on for days about the new kid who caused him to spill his drink. We both got out and moved to the front of the Car where the bird still flailed, Stranger than the fact it hadn’t flown away was what I could see that William couldn’t/ The bird seemed to be a spirit, but from my past run ins with spirits hitching rides on my car, I was more than gun shy. I was tempted to leave well enough alone until William pulled his gun. “Wellup, best to put the poor thing out of it’s misery” he announced and my eyes grew widder “No!” I shouted holding up a hand. “Christ Will…” I said and my sudden scream had enough sway to cause him to rethink the matter, while I attempted to scoop up the injured bird, taking care to avoid the injured limb.

| I wasn’t sure what plan was from that point, it wasn’t like I had taken care of many injured animals, and taking a spirit to the vet seemed out of the question. I watched apprehensively as the large bird climbed to my shoulder. William began to speak but I couldn’t tell you what he said, my attention of the few brief works that the bird spoke to me. “Hey! Earth to Brice!” William finally brought my attention back. “Damn kids never paying attention..” He grumbled. I gave a sigh “Sorry, Will, what did you say?” I asked. “I said…I’m going to patrol on foot, you take care of you meth parrot” He grumbled. “Meth? Will I don’t think its on Meth or a parrot…” I responded but William was already walking away. I watched a moment until I was sure he was out of ear shot then glanced to the bird “I’m not human…Are you a demon?” I asked, knowing full well that my last run-in with demons had been very unpleasant.

| I winced as she nipped my ear before I relaxed a bit as she said she was more of an angel “You certainly have the voice of one” I complimented as she healed herself. I was relieved that the task had not been left to me to find aid for the bird, I didn’t know much about healing, and all I knew was how to hurt. “uh…Brice” I introduced myself looking back to the car. “So what exactly were you doing on my car?” I asked, she had wings, a more reliable method of travel than hitching ride. | |

| As the bird shifted forms to that of beautiful women, my eyes lingered on her curves a moment before looking down and away. I shook my head as she spoke of repaying me, the nobler, human half still quite in control in the fading light. Though in the back of my thoughts, the darker side toyed with other ideas of it would have seen done to her in payment. "There's no need for you to do anything, it’s my job to protect others, human or not, I don’t expect anything more than a thank you, Aria" I said with a heartfelt smile.

| I nodded as she whispered in my ear then turned my gaze back towards William. "Hey, how’d it go?" I asked as he made his way back to the car. "Bah!" was his only answer meaning he hadn’t found anything. I shook my head at him and the older man leaned on the hood to take a breather. "That bird still here?" he asked looking to me, though the answer was clear. "Yeah, I think it must belong to someone, it’s really friendly" I said looking to Aria then back to Will and continued on with my false point. "I’ll turn it in to the shelter after we finish up, see if anyone clams it" I stated before getting into the car and setting the nightingale in the back seat, a much safer place than the roof or windshield. I drove William back to the station and stopped in front of it. When he realized I wasn’t following him in he gave me a strange look. "Our shifts up kid you know" He said looking me over, searching for some clue as to my motives. "Hey William… Do you know anything about the things that have been going on in northernhieghts?" I asked. Williams stern look spoke volumes about how he felt about my question. "Meth, it’s got ahold of the lower C, and now the heights are getting a taste for it." He grumbled and I rolled my eyes. "Of course…" How did I even suspect that William would have a legitimate answer I could actually use? "You’re going solo? You know the Boss won’t like you going in off duty…he hasn’t issued an investigation on anything…." This time William sounded more concerned "He’s already got his eye on ya boy, this little side jobs you’ve been taking and not telling anyone about…" He paused and looked me dead in the eye. "Please Will, if you know anything, just tell me…I’ll be careful," I said, and there was a long pause. "Damn kids taking things into their hands…" He grumbled and acted like he was going to walk off, but he turned at the last minute and came back to the car window. "Try the 8th block district, most the calls come in from there abouts…but I didn’t say that…" He finished before walking off. I nodded and pulled back onto the street.
