| A roar sounded above the waters of The Lake, scattering a few threatened spirits from the area and away from their drinking posts. Near the bottom, accessed by a small cavern, Shou stepped forward from a glowing portal. A light red aura surrounded his body still as he came from it, then died a moment later. "Ah.." With a grin stretching across his face, he took a deep breath of the Earth realm's air. How different it was from the breaths drawn in hell, though smoking brimstone and flames had a darker appeal to them. Not looking to delay for long after his reemergence, Shou dashed forward and dived into the pool of the underwater cavern, swimming out into the mass of The Lake. The water under his feet began to bubble and boil under intense heat, just as his body shot upwards through the aquatic barrier that would take him back into the forest. The water exploded as he surfaced, rocketing into the air as a disc of flame erupted to catch his feet and send him high up into the atmosphere. "Hahaha!" Shou laughed aloud, his wild red eyes cast up into the blue sky of Earth realm. He flipped, a trail of flame following his heel as he redirected his attention down to the ground, hanging upside down in levitation. The lion demon took another breath of the air, or rather a scent of the land below. "Now.." Shou spoke softly to himself, the corner of his lip upturned to a smirk, "Where's all the fun being had?" It had been a long while since he had last stepped foot on these sorts of lands. Shou had to wonder if some of the local spirits would put up anything of a fight for entertainment. The lion demon looked battle-ready at any moment with a breastplate of demonic bone coating his chest. A sword, gun, and wakizashi were sheathed or holstered at his belt, along with a tied off sack. A gloved hand reached and gripped the hilt of Caladbolg, whipping it out as he moved in flight once more, straight down to flip and land just next to The Lake. "I'm itching.." The lion demon muttered, licking his lips before they split open to boom a roar into the forest.

| A figure sat placidly at the far end of the lake, his eyes closed and his feet in the water. Certainly he cut an unusual figure for the time period. His clothes were old, older than the Sacred Hunters' even, and silvery white. They contrasted sharply with the midnight-blighted color of his hair, that hung down until it touched the very sands he sat upon. A metal trinket of some sort bound the black mane back into a ponytail, and when his eyes snapped open in response to the sudden burst of the lake, the cornea was black as well, contrasted by a moon-like iris. What is his problem? the young man thought, standing to his feet and shaking his head. Balrog told him to stand by the lake in hopes of some "inspiration", but this flaming buffoon-thing certainly wasn't the sort of inspiration he sought. He shook the sand out of the tip of his ponytail and frowned up at the sky. How long had he been concentrating, only to turn up nothing? Maybe if he'd been less confident in his demonic overlords, he wouldn't have had the impulse to suddenly shout, "Quiet it down a bit, spirit! Some of us are trying to..." How could he hope to overcome the roar of the fire and the boom of the spirit's voice? He winced somewhat, not the bravest of souls. After all, he wasn't just living and seeking power from spirits for himself. He had an entire family to look after. The adorable faces of his three offspring remained at the forefront of his mind. They relied on him to negotiate with the local demons and ensure they had plenty of gold for a high standard of living. And thus, he talked himself out of confronting the loud creature halfway through his talking. The man shook his head and hastily began walking in the opposite direction, hoping that maybe his rude half-statement hadn't reached the flame spirit's ears. | |

| | This demon here... he knew the sort. Flame wielders had a particularly infamous stereotype, especially fresh out of onitoshi, the way this one appeared to be. All forward pressure, no defense. The worst thing to do would be to try to challenge him at their current respective levels. He still hoped to learn more from his demonic lords... more knowledge and power. He couldn't lose control of the situation here. "I will have to decline, sir," he said, his deep voice nearly a murmur, but full of a cool, resigned confidence. He sure was excited, though. The human stepped out of what could become the trajectory of the pointed sword, uncomfortable with standing directly in front of it. "I am just a lowly human, as you see. One unschooled in the arts of repelling one such as yourself as well. And I taste horrible. Just thought I'd throw that out there." He tilted his head to the side. Somehow this... being seemed oddly familiar. "Have you... been to Ancient Yochi before, by the way? It's on the other side of a large portal." Now he spoke slowly, as though he thought the demon might not understand. That flaming one did come across as a bit of a brute... | |

| "Eh..? Tch." The oni blasted passed the other's position, spinning around as he came to a halt. The fire beneath his feet dispersed as he came to touch down on the grass, eyeing the other being a little suspisciously. "A weakling, huh? Bahhhh.." The lion demon glanced away, casting his sight a little further deeper into the forest. There was still opportunity to find a suitable challenge, he was sure, but his first attempt turning out into a dud was something of a buzzkill to his mood. Growling, he looked back to the man. "What are you doing all the way out here, then? This isn't the place for weak humans to be strolling. I could have skewered you just now." While the notion might have seemed like a bad thing, it incited the grin to return to the demon's lips. |

| | The man coolly avoided eye contact with the onitoshian, instead studying a small insect crawling across a leaf on a shrub. Focus was important. Otherwise, he might grow fearful, and fear might put him in danger, though the sensation in him was very real and had to be repressed. Mildly, he reached for a relatively straight stick that had fallen from a tree and began to twirl it expertly about, gyrating the stick over his head, then behind his back, then slamming it very suddenly on either side of him, finishing off in a somewhat aggressive stance with the wood pointing forward against the ground. "Do you have a family?" he asked rhetorically. "I know it is dangerous for one such as myself to be among demons such as yourself, however, it is more dangerous for my wife and kids to be existing in a land with your sort when I cannot hope to defend them. For that reason, I am out here seeking the power to defend my seed against all the ills of this world." He kept his tone formal, but at the end of it all he still refused to make eye contact with the demon. | |

| | The human frowned. He, a flaming thing with a sword, planned to strike at him. He, who was armed merely with a very large stick. He'd probably be better off using his stick in that case. "I can't fight you..." he insisted dryly. "Not yet. Do you know anything of... possessions?" Hopefully asking a lot of questions would keep the demon's mind away from thoughts of a battle. He did use fire, after all. It'd be easy to kill a normal human accidentally with fire alone. Even if he didn't die... think of the burns! He wanted to keep his skin flawless and his hair long and handsome... if not for himself, then for his wife. | |

| | Great! He was distracted and quite possibly demoralized. The somewhat insulting and/or condescending words of the other managed not to offend the human in the least. He gave a vain toss of his hair. "A spirit on its own is weak. There is strength in union. I could probably do just as well without a spirit inside of me, but every little bit helps. Anyways, I would like to think I am a good host. I'm quite open and available, if nothing else. The power of you types... fascinates me." The man had no idea why he decided to tell this fire demon before him all of his business, but he quickly regained his cool, staring out over the lake. "If you fight me now, I would probably just die. That would bore you as well. I apologize for my deficiencies. However, this lake has much spiritual activity. I was meditating in the hopes of attracting... well, yes. Getting lucky as you say." One might've thought he was a professor giving a lecture to a remedial class. "I've heard the process can feel quite... invasive. Painful even. The raw penetration of a wild spirit into your willing and helpless form. I don't like the idea of baiting things I do not understand." He frowned. "But I don't know what else to do. Like you." He waved his arm in a broad gesture at the demon. "You can use the flame. I can't do that. No matter how good I got at fighting with this stick, how am I supposed to beat your fire? I could die and become a spirit like you, but my wife and kids need me here. This is my compromise. I'll simply be half spirit. How many humans do you know who can manifest raw elemental power unless they were born with such a thing?" | |

| | The man continued to stare off over the lake calmly. "If I must be broken to better protect my family, I will endure it." The statement had a decisive sort of resignation to it, but also a strong tone of sadness. Honestly, it felt as though he'd given up so much to Onitoshi already. He still had no guarantee the demons he'd befriended wouldn't just go and eat his family simply because it pleased them. For once, he looked up and actually looked the spirit in the eyes, in the process revealing his own unusual sclera and irises. "What is your name, demon?" | |
