A Bit of A Mind Slip

Kyno pushed the boarded up doors open as he exited the apartment building. No doubt some random kids had busted the glass doors again, and knowing his landlord he probably hadn’t gotten around to calling a repairmen yet. With a sigh he stopped a moment felt up his pockets. “Phone, keys, wallet, watch…” No matter how many times he checked to make sure there was nothing he was forgetting he always felt he’d forgotten something. It was irritating at best to feel your own mind was angst you but it was. Kyno’s determination to live his life as normally as possible told him that everyone forgot things, it was not that odd. In reality however it was embarrassing to walking into a store with no recollection of how you got there or way you’d come, only to return home to find that you’d forgotten toilet paper, or bread, witch was why’d you’d gone in the first place. Fortunately the market clerk knew him, and yet never greeted him any differently no matter home many times in one day Kyno ended up there he always acted like it was the first time he’d seen him all day.

After checking that he’d had everything for the hundredth time Kyno shoved his hands into his pockets and began down the street, with no way of knowing if he’d get to his destination or black out and end up in gothstone again. It took him twenty minutes to realize this walk was taking a lot longer than it normally did and as he took a closer look at his surroundings he quickly realized that he’d never been this way before. It was impossible for him to tell if he’d actually forgotten the way or if he’d just wandered of the path. Had seen this street before or was truly lost? Did that even matter lost was lost either way. A pit of fear began to rise in his chest, what if he forgotten the way back? Or his address how would he get home?

“Fuck…” He murmured under his breath and leaded against a brick building. He just needed to relax, he wasn’t dumb, and he could figure out a decent plan as long as he kept his cool. Running his fingers through the pale strands of hear he tried to remember anything that would be a clue as to what he should do next.

A Bit of A Mind Slip

Kyno’s suspicions were proved right when he saw a sign that advertised a local establishment as “The heart of Gothstone”, so he was indeed in another part town. Still his stubborn pride wouldn’t allow him to ask anyone for help, he had to do this on his own, for himself. Knowing were he was made him more relaxed, and able to disappear amongst the people that hustled along the sidewalks. He’d have to just do his shopping around on this end of town today. Was it a bother, yes, but no one could possible say his life was boring at this point? He was never sure what would happen, or where he’d end up, even going to the store was turning into more of an adventure than he’d planned for.

As he walked, his mind trailed off on its own path apart from the one he walked, what would life be like if he’d never gotten sick? If he lived forever what could he accomplish, what kind of man would he turn into? Did any of that matter, or could he still be that man if set his mind to it? Was there even a life after death, or would he just float into oblivion. The thoughts tumbled through his mind like sands through an hour glass, the same thoughts counting down to one unavoidable truth, he was going to die and there was nothing he could do about it, he just knew his time would be sooner than later.

He paused a moment and looked up just in time to see he almost ran into someone. Jerking to the left at the last possible moment his lips parted to offer a pardon only to see a goulash face looking back at him. With a shout that he couldn’t contain escaping him Kyno whirled back and into stranger in pure terror. “Gah!” He stammered but now saw nothing where the specter had been. The stranger gave a gruff and irritated “Watch where you’re going!” before muttering something and continuing down the sidewalk. “W-what the hell was that?..” the young man could still feel his heart pounding against his ribs. Had he finally laps over and begun hallucinating? The doctors said if the tumor grew one of the side effects could be seeing things but he’d never imagined they’d be so terrifying and random. Still it seemed so real, could he really be loosing it that badly?

A Bit of A Mind Slip

Kyno was still in shock, however he did notice the strange glances he was starting to attract just sitting there staring into open air. Trying to regain his wits, he gave a helpless sigh, so much for blending in like a normal person. Maybe it was the stress of getting so far off track or perhaps it was his empty stomach, but he couldn’t fix either problem sitting there like a dumb puppy. Kyno shifted and using the side of a building to help pull him self back to his feet. He nearly had a second heart attack when the wall gave way and he tumbled into a shop. In fact he’d failed to notice that said wall of the shop was indeed the door of the shop and had giant red letters spelling out “Push” clearly written on it.

Kyno caught himself none too gracefully before falling and breaking anything other than his already withering pride. “Maybe todays getting to eventful for my liking…” He murmured as he once more drug him self back to two feet and glanced around. This place looked so strange and yet oddly familiar. As this thought ran across his mind a voice barked from the other side of a counter in the corner. “Hey! Watch what you’re doing…” An old man warned as he scuttled over to the bewildered young man and looked up into his eyes with half senile look.
“S-sorry…” Kyno tried to apologize but was clearly ignored by the man who was still staring into his face and began to rub his beard. There was long unsettling silence as Kyno was just glared at by the old man. Finally he couldn’t stand it and opened his mouth.
“Wha-”
“Hey! Didn’t your parent’s ever teach you to keep you’re mouth shut when someone’s talking to you?” The old man snapped.
“W-what!? You weren’t saying ANYTHING!” Kyno protested and his words were answered with a swift crack of a cane across his arm. “Gah! What’s wrong with you!?” He shouted in pain and disbelief that the old man had struck him without any cause.
“Tsk tsk…kids these days…” the old man grumbled “Can’t see anything, no respect and their damned clothes never fit!!” He uttered. Kyno didn’t pay too much attention this man was clearly insane far beyond his own mental shortcomings. The man turned back quickly and fearing the bite of his cane once more Kyno flinched. This must have amused the old coot because he abruptly broke into laughter.
“Hehehahaheha…A jumper, boy you act like you’ve seen a ghost…” The man then stopped mid laugh and his eyes studied the young man before narrowing. “Ah, ya have seen a ghost haven’t ya?” He questioned edging closer.

A Bit of A Mind Slip

Kyno’s eyes widened, there was no way this guy could possibly know about that, but he did. Still trying to look as sane as he possibly could Kyno shook it off. “Are you kidding? Ghost aren’t real” He answered but his gaze must have betrayed his words because the man smiled showing off his snarled row of yellow and missing teeth.
“Now even I can tell you don’t believe a lick of what you just said.” The man retorted and hobbled off into the shop. Kynos eyes fell to the floor, was he that easy to read? His head lifted as he followed after the man.
“Are you saying I’m crazy?” He asked and the man began to rummage through a old trunk.
“Well I’ll tell you what you aren’t, you aren’t crazy but your no where near normal boy…” He grumbled as he coughed on dust.
“What? So then what am I?” The man hesitated a moment in his digging to reply.
“You’re dying…” He murmured.
Kyno was shocked, no one besides himself had ever said it that way before and he wasn’t sure he liked the sound of it coming from another person. Kyno looked down and closed his eyes as he tried not to let it get to him.
"I’m not dead yet…” He finally said.
“No, but either way you’re the in-between, you can see bother worlds…” The man explained and Kyno’s crimson eyes took on an air of confusion.
“Both worlds?” He asked.
“Yes, the mortal world around us that everyone sees ” He said knocking on one of the wood shelves. “And the sprints that we share it with, those that people are less aware of…” the man then bent over and the top half of him disappeared into the box as he continued to search. What he said made sense, or at lest it was better than thinking he was losing his mind anymore than he had already. Just then the man popped back up with a charm in his hand.
“Here take this, free of charge, a newbie like you will need it…I doubt you know what you’re stepping into but it should help unless you get into anything serious.” The man said handing him the pendant. Kyno wondered what he was talking about, protect him, what he was getting into, anything too serious, none of that sounded very fun. Still he took the pedant if for nothing more than to calm the mind of an old fool, or perhaps he was the fool only time would tell.
